The Inquistion by Taran Matharu
Goodreads Rating: 4.34
The Inquisition is the second book in the Summoner series. I thought the first one was okay, but the pacing was off.
This follows our main character, Fletcher, who can summon demons and goes to a school to learn to be a Battlemage on the front lines of the war against the Orcs. Humans also have animosity with the Elves and Dwarves, which make for an excited diverse cast of characters. Fletcher friends an Elf and a Dwarf at school and things go from there.
Matharu had the same issues in the second novel. With this being a second novel, I felt like this should have picked up where it left off and kept running. However, the start was EXTREMELY slow. It was slow for well over 100 of these pages. It felt like a first novel to me. However, once it picks up, it really picks up. I enjoyed the last half of the novel, which see our first journey into Orc territory. We have some character deaths. Definitely good action at the end.
Overall, 3 stars. I do plan on finishing the series.
Before She Knew Him by Peter Swanson
Goodreads Rating: 3.89
Before She Knew Him is the first novel I have read by Peter Swanson. I had heard nothing but great things about the author, so was super excited to read this.
This tells the story of neighbors. Hen and Lloyd move right next door to Matthew and his wife. Hen and Lloyd are over for dinner and Hen thinks she recognizes a token that was stolen from a murder scene in Matthew’s office. Is her new neighbor a murderer? Or is she having a psychotic breakdown like she has in the past?
I thought Hen was a psycho, let’s be real. I can’t say much without spoiling it. However, I did enjoy this book. I did not see the twist coming….like at all. But it did leave me with a lot of questions that went unanswered. Overall, bravo to Swanson. I’ll probably read more of his books.
