This is Karin Slaugher’s debut novel and the first novel in the Grant County series. This is the second Karin Slaughter novel I have read. I read Pretty Girls earlier this year.
This series has 3 main characters. Sara Linton, who is the town’s pediatrician and part time coroner; Jeffrey Tolliver, the town’s chief of police and Sara’s ex-husband; and Lena Adams, who is a detective. This story takes place in a very small fictional town in Georgia and starts out with Sara finding a woman, also Lena’s sister, raped and murdered in a restaurant bathroom. Of course, we are trying to figure out whodunit.
I have noticed that Karin Slaughter has some really gruesome books. I hear that this trend continues through most of her books. Some people might be turned off by that. It does make me like a book less, but I still think this is going to turn out to be a great series and I will keep reading this.
I have read a lot of Patricia Cornwell and her Scarpetta series. If you are a fan of that series, Karin Slaughter’s novels blow her out of the water. A lot less boring than Cornwell’s work.
Overall, I enjoyed the start to this series and give this book a good 4 stars. The characters were all pretty likeable. I didn’t like Lena at first. I didn’t think she fit well in the story, but by the end, she grew on me.
